Pig Pile on Firefighter Collins
Some of the most dangerous situations that face firefighters working in a burning structure is becoming trapped. This is caused by entanglement in falling debris or wires, structural collapse or by falling through holes. Members of the East Greenwich Fire District participated in a program through the National Fire Academy called “Calling the Mayday: Hands on training for Firefighters”. This program is designed to train firefighters to act in these circumstaces and quickly call for help in order to get out alive. Deputy Chief Henrikson attended a Health and Safety Symposium in Chicago where he learned about this and many other safety oriented programs. Lt. David Drew and Lt. Tom Mears were the lead instructors for the members of the fire district.
Trying to use a portable and activate the Panic Alert Button while blinded was a bit harder than we originally thought.
To simulate becoming trapped under a falling structure, firefighters were held down using chainlink fence and then required to find their radio and call for help.
Instructors built the obstacle course to include a "Trap Door" to simulate falling through a floor.
